From
the Kitchen

Happy Fall! As this is the time of year
for many new families to join us, I thought I would share a little information
about your children’s dining experience at Lifeways. For those of you who
would like to know the meals and snacks that your child is offered each day, or
if you need to know for any special dietary requirements, you can find the menu
for each week posted in the kitchen. If there are any questions about
ingredients used, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Our
weekly lunch rhythm is as follows: Monday-Sandwich Day, Tuesday-Pasta Day,
Wednesday-Beans and Rice Day, Thursday- Soup and Bread Day, Friday- Pizza Day
or “Breakfast for Lunch” Day. There are always abundant, fresh veggies and
fruits, including some from our own patch in the community garden. The harvest
has now turned to fall crops and we have a cornucopia of squashes, peppers and
tomatoes. Children will be enjoying butternut squash soup and muffins and
spiced pumpkin cake.
We
follow a weekly Rhythm in order to give the children a sense of security to
know what is coming. This also provides them with the framework for a
sequence of events. Offering similar foods multiple times over the span
of several months helps the children become acclimated to new foods and
eventually sometimes even the pickiest eaters will look forward to their weekly
snacks and lunches. Each meal and snack begins with a blessing and ends
with a song of gratitude, calling to mind all in our sphere that contribute to
the well-being of our community.
